La Magdalena is a flamenco dancer, teaching artist and choreographer based in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

She has been practicing the art of flamenco for over 30 years in studios, on stages and in classrooms throughout the U.S. and Spain.
Trained in New York City and Seville, Spain since 1994, Magdalena moved to DC in 2013. Inspired by her little dancing daughter, she created Flamenco 4 Kids!™ -- a children's program serving over a dozen local schools which since its inception has trained hundreds of kids in the art of Flamenco dance and rhythm.

Dance Flamenco DC's Mission
Arts in education and community outreach are essential to Dance Flamenco DC’s mission.
Magdalena believes in the power of art to integrate communities, cultural backgrounds and individual expression.
Flamenco is a performance art, a culture, and a way of life which originated in the South of Spain, or Andalucia.
There are three main artistic elements in Flamenco: singing (cante), dance (baile) and guitar (guitarra). In addition, members of the group play "palmas" or hand-clapping to support each other rhythmically.

The relationship between the artists is similar to that of Jazz - there is a basic structure everyone must follow, a language everyone must share.

On an emotional level Flamenco can feel like an eruption of passion, pathos, joy and rebellion. Each performer carries her own expressive charge and specific style, yet the group communicates together to create a unified explosion of artistry.

Today, Flamenco is nothing short of an international phenomenon.
What is Flamenco?
THANK YOU for everything you give all of your students, including (and especially!) your little beginner birds! What a joy to be a part of this community – so supportive, inspiring, and bold! This really feels like the beginning of a long and addictive journey . . .
