Abanico (Spanish Fan)

The fan is a flirtatious yet surprisingly assertive prop in the contemporary flamenco repertoire requiring a technique all its own.

Originating in Asia around the 7th century, it arrived in Europe in the 15th century through Portuguese trade. From there it made its way to southern Spain, where it quickly gained popularity thanks to the hot Andalusian climate.

The Abanico is most often used to accompany songs such as Guajiras and Caracoles, and as you will see at Dance Flamenco DC , Sevillanas. It is a symbol of grace, and can even portray a certain sassiness.

While there is specific technique (such as the inward wrist rotations or abrupt snapping open and shut), the movements are not bound to specific meanings. A dancer will use the abanico in ways that reflect her mood and the feeling of the music.

A limited selection of fans are available for purchase at the studio.
