Adult Flamenco Class Descriptions
Beginner Flamenco
An introduction to the art of Flamenco rhythm and dance, brought to you straight from Spain! Learn palmas (hand clapping), taconeo (footwork), and the lyrical arm & hand movement called marcaje which accompany the traditional ‪cante (song)‬. Train your ears right along with your body by exploring the mysterious rhythmic patterns of the "compás." No experience necessary! Skirts and shoes available for purchase.
Advanced Beginner Flamenco
Continue polishing your basic skills by coordinating footwork with upper body. Train your ear to recognize and move to the compás properly and confidently. Footwork drills at varying tempos increase strength, speed and stamina. A series of intense marcajes help create centeredness, proper colocación, and clarity of movement by which we build endurance and afición. Minimum 1 year previous study required.
Intermediate/Advanced
In this class students prepare for the stage as they master different palos as well as their proper accompaniment. This level also introduces the concept of the cuadro. Basic requirements: professional palmas, jaleos, and at least one solo choreography; experience dancing Sevillanas with castanets; familiarity with most common forms (Alegrías, Bulerías, Fandangos, Tangos etc); respect of and interest in traditional flamenco culture; willingness to learn fast and furiously; regular attendance.
Flamenco Technique
Learn the fundamentals of flamenco dance from head to toe. This invigorating class covers basic technique with an emphasis on mastering the critical relationship between the flamenco body and its musicality, or “compás.” Lessons focus on a variety exercises for footwork, body posture, movement and coordination and may end with an introduction to some traditional steps. This class is most effective when taken with choreography.
Sevillanas
Vamos para Féria! This social dance is performed solo or with a partner. Make friends, get exercise, and learn a very unique dance form all at the same time! Sevillanas are often seen performed at schools, parties, weddings, bars, and of course the annual Spring Fair in Seville, Spain. Known for their charismatic, lively gracefulness, each section ends with a sudden stop as dancers strike a pose, inspiring the audience to shout ¡Ole!
Castanets
Pa-rrrria-pi-ta! Learn to play "los palillos"! Castanets are a percussive instrument used in both the Flamenco and Spanish Dance repertoire. In this class students learn the basic skills to gradually create the carritilla (roll sound). While Beginners coordinate castanets with simple movements those with more experience practice various combinations por Sevillanas, Fandangos and Seguiriya.
Student and professional grade castanets available for purchase.
Curso de Compás Flamenco
EVERY FLAMENCO PERFORMER IS A PERCUSSIONIST! Compás is the glue that holds Flamenco music, song & dance together. In this class Magdalena cracks open the mystery of flamenco rhythm. Students are challenged at their individual levels to explore the various sounds, patterns, effects, and subtleties created just by clapping our hands together. Get comfortable with "contratiempo" … from finger snaps to footwork! Explore musicality in a casual, fun environment. Musicians, Aficionados, and of course Dancers are welcome.
Repertorio

Great classes, great teacher and great experience!
I have always been curious about Flamenco and this course was a great introduction. I love how flamenco gives a boost to my confidence and pushes me to put myself out there. I recommend this if you are looking to do something different, out of your comfort zone and want to learn something new. Gracias Magda!
